Creating The IMW Logo

The logo I had chosen to make was the IMW logo as it was the on which got the most votes on my blog.
I started off by writing the phrase IMW in the impact text to make it bold and easy to read.

I then moved the letter W closer to the letter M to make it more individual.

I then moved the I closer to the M and W, I removed a diagonal line from the M and the W to  make it stand out so you can see the different letters, then I decided to go with the red and black theme and changed the letter M to red and the other two black.

I wanted to add something else to the logo, so I added the word Weekly at the bottom as a test to see weather I Liked it or not I wasn't sure about this decision though.

I then decided that I didn't want the Weekly at the bottom and I decided that I would have the words that the acronym stands for above it. I also copied the colour scheme from the letters into the words, but i reversed them to have a good effect.

Photos Which I Took

Here is a list of some of the photos which I have taken and the pro's and con's of each of them.

Photo 1:

Pro: The artists are in the right pose and they are being serious.

Con: The bright orange glasses are a bit of a distraction and they dont fit the Indie genre.

 Photo 2:

Pro: The artist are in the right pose again.

Con: They both have different facial expressions and the orange glasses are back and the hand of the
Artist on the right is too high.

Photo 3:

Pro: They are in a good pose and the glasses are more subtle and the hand is in the right position.

Con: Then Artist on the left has a different facial expression.

Photo 4:

Pro: The glasses are gone and the hand is in a better place.

Con: The models have there heads in different angles making it look unprofessional.

Photo 5:

Pro: They have the right position and similar facial expressions

Con: The model on the left is leaning back a bit too much.

Photo 6:

Pro: The idea was to capture the model in mid flight for a bit of effect.

Con: The camera shutter speed was slow so the image was captured at the wrong time and was blurry.

Photo 7:

Pro: The Same idea was used and there is less blur than the previous one.

Con: The camera shutter speed was again slow so I only got the landing, and the face is a bit Blurry.

Photo 8:

Pro: The Model is in the right position, facing the camera and looking like he is comfortable.

Con: The photo only consists of one member of the band so I might need to change it to be a solo artist.

Photo 9:

Pro: The facial expression is good and the position of the head is good as well.

Con: The guitar is half off the screen and the left hand is in an awkward place.

Photo 10:

Pro: The Guitar is in the right position.

Con: The facial Expression is not the one I was looking to capture.

Double page spread and contents page example

I like the NME double page spread, as it is one colour over the two pages with an image overlayed over the background, the image is on the left page, however the image then continues a bit onto the next page, the black text also stands out on the red background.

The NME has a rather plain contents page as it is just a white background with photos and a little quote under each article. However the simplicity works with this magazine, trying to make it look neat and inividual like the genre that the magazine is made for.

The Name of My Indie Music Magazine

I Have decided on four names for my magazine, these are:

  • Untitled
  • Indie Weekly
  • BOLD
  • IMW

The reason why I came up with Untitled is because it is independent and unique like the independent music genre, as it is all about discovering something new, and I think the title works with the genre. I have come up with a few fonts which make this title look good.

The reason why I came up with Indie Weekly is because it is what it says it is independent music on a weekly basis, keeping you up to date with the newest tracks available.

The reason why I came up with BOLD is because it is a representation of what indie music is, and the people, they have to be bold to come up with some of these ideas they have weather it be fashion or it be the music.
The reason I came up with the IMW is because it is an abbreviation of Independent Music Weekly which is a short snappy name which sticks, it is influenced from the likes of NME and FHM as they are shortened versions of the name and they are both well known magazines and could be recognised by anyone.

Audience Video Questionnaire

Cast

The Cast which i am going to be using are:

Maybe one of my friends as they are into this sort of thing and are in a  band and would happily dress the way I need them too, also the fit the style of the genre I want to do, which includes a lot of vintage clothes wear, which they wear.
However if I chose the other front cover I wanted to do then i would have to use some other people for a band, or maybe there is one of the band members on the front cover and all of them on the double page spread. I have an idea for the rest of the band members if I choose to take this route.

Props+Location

The Props I am going to be using are:

  • A bass guitar as that is they type of instrument which would appear in a band, which is what most people who read my magazine will be in.

  • If i am going to feature a band on the front cover i will need a drumkit

  • If there is a band on the front cover then i will probably have a guitarist on there and the rest of the band

  • Paint? (another idea i have had for a front cover)

  • White (T-Shirt)

  • White canvas material

  • Locations:

the locations that i might use are:

  • A room which has white walls (can be anywhere)

  • An old looking house (georgian) as it fits in with the indie style sort of

  • A stage because that is where a band would preform

    LIIAR Analysis Of Contents Pages

The contents page of the NME is well structured, making it easy to navigate around to find the article which you want to read. the main article is in the center of the page (which is also the biggest article) with the sub articles around the outside of the main one, the magazine has the same layout as every other week so the audience will know that they are getting the same product that they are used to. the colour scheme of the page is black and white like an old fashioned news paper. The numbers are surrounded by a white box, again making it easier for the consumer to read it. The NME is produced by IPC Media, which began in the 50's, IPC has three divisions, the division that the NME is in is called inspire which is mainly aimed at men however it is likely that females will read it too. The ideas and beliefs of this magazine are to inform music lovers about what is hot and what is not and it also has album reviews so you can decide is you want to get the album or not, you can usually tell if you want to buy the magazine by the cover if it is an artist that you don't particularly like then the magazine is probably going to focus on them or there genre of music. The target audience of the magazine is for predominantly males aged 16-30 purely because of the music artist in the magazine for example Jay-Z, you associate his music with males aged between that age. The magazine also contains album reviews which is something you would find teenagers involved in not someone from the older generation. The NME magazine representations do not really show any character as the page looks like a newspaper, however this can be considered a 'retro' style.
The contents page of the Rolling Stones magazine is like the NME's as it is well structured and rather basic. like the NME the style reminds me of an old newspaper with the font a pretty basic font, and the colour scheme sticking to the basic black, white and red (which is traditionally the colours in which a newspaper would be printed in) however unlike the MNE the Rolling Stones magazine does not have photos for each of the feature articles, but it has one photo for the main article in the magazine, with the rest of the articles written in plain text around the outside of the main feature. the masthead on the contents page is again rather basic, but it follows the same conventions as the previous issues of the magazine, so again frequent consumers will know what they are getting from the magazine. The Rolling Stone magazine is produced by Wenner Media LLC which was founded by Jenn Wenner who is the co-founder and publisher of the Rolling Stone magazine. The ideas and beliefs behind the magazine is to inform Audiences of the music and polotics in the world as well as current affairs. the Target audience for the rolling stone magazine is for the younger generation, as you can tell this by the fact that they are very popular on social media sites such as facebook and twitter, facebook having over one million likes and twitter closing on three million followers. the media pack states that 62% of its readers are male where as only 38% are female, and they have a median age of thirty three years old. The representation of the Rolling Stone magazine, like the NME doesn't have much to say about its self as it is plain like a newspaper, again suggesting the 'retro' style, and making it look Indie.

    Photographic influences

This photograph influences me because although the magazine has nothing to do about football the idea of covering the cover artist in black paint is a pretty indie thing to do so i might end up doing this style for my cover and double page spread.
This photo influences me as it is a Georgian house which is what you stereo typically expect indie people to like the look of, as they look very retro.
I like the idea of this photograph being taken in a vintage style although what they are wearing is very modern, it adds to the atmosphere and i might like to do something like this for the theme of my magazine.

LIIAR Analysis Of Front Page + How I Produced It

    Language
The model on the front of the magazine is a student from wyke college which shows who the magazine is aimed at. the model is wearing as smart casual style which gives the reader the impression that they are a student at the college, the stylish top is showing that it theI had to admagazine is not aimed at tbackgroundlder people as they are stereotypically not into fashion or reading college magazine as it does not fit the conventions of older people's magazines, the age of the magazines audience is between 16-19 years of age as that is the typical age for college students the model is in brightI had to clothinI had to make my ow to show that they areI maned happy and brings a friendly vibe to the magazinI added . the model is not lI addeoking direcat the camera because they are not directly addressing the audience and the audience will be wondering what he is looking at, people might think that the model is looking at his exam results or going about his own buisnes but they will also follow the line of sight rule and will be draI had to n to the article which it appears that the model is looking at. a colour scheme is shown and the colours which are ty. cally associatedI did was I addedith the college these are purple and green and white, so it makes a strong connection between the college and the magazine, and the white is there to show contrast between the dark background. the masthead is large and covers the majority of the top third of the magazine. The picture of the model is a medium close up so you can see most of the bidy language and get a rough idea of what is going on. the layout is conventional layout with a masthead at the top with a little strap line and there is a skyline a footer a barcode a printing company and the articles, the strap line states lifestyle which makes the reader know that it is not orientated around one topic.

    Institution
the magazine is made and produced entirely by me although I did have to make a fake production company which i named 'past printing' as it is in contrast with 'future', i also have a qr. code on the front which is linked to my blog so people would be able to visit the website if it were a real website.

    Ideology
the ideology of the the magazine is clear as the headlines are about things that are happening in the college at the time of the magazine being published, as I do not want anyone else other than the intended audience to be reading this, the magazine costs £4.99 which is a pretty hefty price for a magazine, but i want the audience to be reading this and then associate the college with rather high standards and make it look like a nice place. the fact that i have a student on the front makes the audience think that it is all true with no strings attached so it is all genuine, also the layout of the magazine looks rather conventional with the text curving around the models head which makes the magazine look more professional rather than a cheap magazine. the magazine looks like it has been produced by a top publisher when it has actually been produced on the cheap because it follows certain conventions. the models head is also infront of the masthead which states that the brand is well known by the regular readers being college students.

    Audience
the model on the front of the magazine instantly tells you that the audience of the magazine is college students or want to be college students. the way you can tell this is by some of the head lines which have been associated with college life as there is a certain one about grades. another way you can tell that it is aimed at college students is, it says that not to miss out on a chance to vote for the mafta's which are a bunch of awards organised by the college so people who are not in the college will not be able to relate to some of the content, so in some ways it is not open to all individuals and so ways it is.

    Representation
The representation of the magazine shows that it is based on college life as everything from the model to the story lines are shown to be associated with college, for example the model is a student of wyke college which will increase the amount of people buying the college magazine as they will be able to recognise the face on the front cover the depth of field in the background makes the audience focus on what is in the for ground which is the model and the main headlines the fact that the model is looking away from the magazine makes the reader want to know what the model is looking at, or it might make the reader want to know why the magazine is breaking convention and why the model is looking away form the camera.

    How i produced my magazine
The first thing i tarted off with was the draft to get a idea of what i wanted to do This is when I came up with my draft which I really liked the look of so i decided to re produce it but with images Which I took myself. The first image I took was an image if the front of oak building as this would allow there to be a lot of sky where I could place my masthead wich is 'Wyke Lifestyle' and the clouds would make it feel calmer and attract more attention to the magazine. The next thing which I had to do was to take a picture of my model anf it happened to be me I had a friend to take a photo of me so it would make life easier, the downside to this was I had to change the colour of myself as I had an Orange tint from the lights which I used to take the photo with.
I then proceeded to place thr masthead and strapline onto the top of my magazine I used the same font as I did in my mock as through research I found was highly effective. I noticed that the background was too strong on the eyes and drew the attention away from the foreground so i had to add a depth of field to the background which rediced the effect that it had abd drew attention to the foreground. On the front cover you can notice that there is a splash advert which is the obe about the maftas this automatically draws attention to the article although it is not the main storyline. Another thing which i had to do was i had to make my own print company which i named past after the company future, another feature i added was a qr code which i added to fit in with modern day technology so people can access the internet page which is where the technology is heading now anyway, I have also included a price and a barcode. On the top above the masthead there is a skyline withsome of the content which is featured in the magazine another thing i had to do was remove some spots off of the model which was easy enough with the plasta tool and you can notice the difference. The final thing i did was i removed the wyke sign from the backround so it doesnt distract the eye and makes it easier to read the main storylines.

    Photographs Taken

here we have two shots of my model I chose to pick the one where he is facing the left because of the more informal image and so it breaks some conventions but not that much.

these are the two shots which i eventually had to choose between, i went for the one at the bottom so i could zoom in on the building and still have a lot of clouds so i could put my masthead on it.

i have this qr code so it links in with modern day technology, and it also links to my blog.
I also had to make y own printing company so i named it 'past' instead of the actual one 'future'
